His research field is opto-electronic components and III-V compound semiconductor technology. In this field, he focuses on innovative semiconductor lasers for sensor technology and broadband communication applications in the near and mid-infrared range as well as terahertz radiation sources.

After completing his studies in electrical engineering at TUM, Prof. Amann received his doctorate in 1981. From that year until 1994, he played a key research role at Siemens AG, becoming a member of the senior management team for the development of laser diodes. Prior to becoming a full professor at TUM, he headed up the Chair of Technical Electronics at the University of Kassel until 1998. Two spin-off companies originated from Prof. Amann’s group – Vertilas GmbH ( 2001) and Brolis Semiconductors UAB ( 2011). He is also a member of the VDE and a fellow of the IEEE.

    Abstract
In this work we report on recent progress in developing beyond-state-of-the-art GaSb-based swept-wavelength laser technology as a key building-block of the proposed spectroscopic sensor concept. We provide experimental data of in vitro sensing concentrations down to the normal physiological range and beyond for glucose, lactates, urea and bovine serum albumin. Furthermore, we provide initial experimental evidence of non-invasive in vivo sensing experiment. Finally, to demonstrate the full potential of the spectroscopic sensor technology for the wearable device market, we present results of our initial effort to realize a complete spectroscopic sensor system-on-a-chip based on hybrid GaSb/Si material platform.

June 11-15, 2018 Ghent, Belgium. Brolis Semiconductors is proud to sponsor the 3rd ePIXfab Silicon Photonics Summer School! The summer school runs from 11th to 15th June 2018  and is followed by the design course from 18th to 22nd June 2018 at Ghent University (Belgium). The two modules can be taken together or separately.

The Silicon Photonics Summer School is designed to equally benefit the beginners and experts in the field of silicon photonics. It will expose the participants to the fundamental concepts of silicon photonics. Also, it will provide the participants with a unique opportunity to get a strong insight into the latest developments in the field, and give insight in the many application fields where silicon photonic is, or will be, making an impact. Renowned speakers in the field of silicon photonics will showcase hot topics and latest research results for various applications of silicon photonics. The summer school has two poster sessions at the summer school. The goal of the poster session is to provide the participants with an opportunity to interact with world-renowned experts of silicon photonics to discuss their ideas and potential challenges.

The Specialist Course on Silicon Photonics Design offers a focused, hands-on design course. It is targeted at researchers and engineers with an already fundamental understanding of photonic integrated circuits. The course focused on the process to translate a photonic circuit idea into a working chip, going from schematic design and circuit simulation to layout, routing and interactive design rule checking. As part of the course, the participants get the opportunity to actually tape-out a design that will be fabricated with an e-beam prototyping service and characterized. Based on these results, the design can be improved and submitted to a wafer-scale multi-project-wafer run of which the participants will receive the final chips.
